During a live press conference a group of KDP members and members of the press conference in front of the Kurdish Parliament Rabun Maruf was attacked. His comments about the current leader Masoud Barzani and the failed policies that have led to catastrophe in the Kurdish Region of Iraq ignited the KDP members and press which resulted in attacking MP Maruf. There are rising fears for the lives of MPs opposed to the current ruling Barzani family after the public attack in front of parliament.
There is an expectation that Masoud Barzani will step down soon but there remains low hope for free and fair elections to decide on the next president. Concerns currently are that Masoud Barzani will leave the presidency to his son or nephew while maintaining a tight control behind the scenes where he is less criticised. He has so far not been seen publicly since the loss of Kirkuk city. Given the tribal nature of the Kurdish Region of Iraq the transition of power within the Barzani family is expected and the continuation of many ministries controlled by the family is again expected to continue. The conclusions many Kurdish residents are forming is the referendum has not added to their lives, Kurdistan region has lost many of it’s disputed territories, it’s oil management and borders all for the sake of a family which has become wealthy on their behalf. The next few days are integral to the future of many Kurdish residents and are contingent on the Kurdish leadership in formulating clear policy without overtones of tribal back dealings, although hope is limited.
Rabun Maruf: Peshmerga are brave and honorable and I would never criticise them. This is about the top leadership that fled, there are approximately 50 of them.
Rabun Maruf: They fled from Shingal, Maxmur and Kirkuk and they should all be removed.
KDP Members & Pressers: You are insulting Peshmerga!
Rabun Maruf: Look how they act, Barzani’s people, just look at them.
